Australia is entering an ageing society, and the demand for healthcare services that support mobility, muscle health, and overall wellbeing continues to grow. This is especially evident among senior populations in the Canberra community, where maintaining independence and quality of life has become increasingly important. At Siam Orchid Thai Therapeutic Clinic, a community-based survey was conducted with 28 participants in Canberra to better understand the health needs of older adults. The findings clearly highlight a significant shift.
Massage is no longer viewed as a luxury for relaxation β it is becoming an essential part of healthcare support.
π§ Understanding Seniors in the Canberra Community
The survey results show that the majority of respondents were aged 70 years and above (over 75%), with 64.3% identifying as female.
Additionally, 75% of participants reported living independently, indicating that many seniors in the Canberra community are actively seeking ways to maintain their health, mobility, and independence.
This highlights the growing importance of preventive and supportive therapeutic care.
πͺ Common Health Concerns
The most frequently reported issues include:
- Neck and shoulder pain (67.9%)
- Lower back pain (35.7%)
- Pain in multiple areas, including hips, knees, and legs
These conditions are commonly associated with:
- Postural strain
- Repetitive movements
- Age-related musculoskeletal changes
This demonstrates a clear need for targeted, structured, and clinically informed treatment approaches.
π§ Behaviour and Expectations
While many participants have experienced massage therapy, 69.2% reported seeking treatment only when pain occurs, indicating a largely reactive approach to care.
However, when asked about desired outcomes, respondents identified:
- Improved overall wellbeing (46.4%)
- Better mobility (42.9%)
- Pain relief (39.3%)
These findings show that seniors are not only seeking comfort, but are increasingly focused on functional health outcomes and long-term wellbeing.
β€οΈ The Importance of Therapeutic Care
The survey revealed that:
- Over 89% of respondents consider therapeutic massage important to their health
- More than 80% expressed interest in specialised massage programs for seniors
This reflects a strong readiness within the Canberra community to adopt a more structured and therapeutic approach to care.
πΏ From Traditional Massage to Therapeutic Healthcare
Thai massage offers unique strengths in:
- Muscle release
- Assisted stretching
- Circulation support
When integrated with modern therapeutic principles, it can evolve into a holistic care approach that:
- Supports mobility and flexibility
- Reduces chronic pain
- Enhances quality of life
- Promotes healthy ageing within the community
π Conclusion
The findings from this survey clearly demonstrate that senior populations in the Canberra community are seeking more than relaxation β they are seeking meaningful, therapeutic care.
Thai massage, when developed into a structured Thai Therapeutic Clinic model, has the potential to become a valuable part of Australia’s modern healthcare system.
At Siam Orchid, we are committed to this transformation β supporting the community through professional, personalised, and outcome-focused care.
